The plan is straight forward.
- get a modem that supports routing trough a vpn and hosting a vpn
- use operating systems that got rid of google services, apple stuff and all other tracking etcetera. Fedora and e-os are my choices
(spoiler, this was so fucking easy and hardly had any impact for me)
- get a vpn and email service (I can self-host my email, but an internet outage would mean I can miss important mail). For people that just want to get away from the big tech companies, these services offer everything the big tech companies offer, but in a privacy friendly way.
- replace my home automation devices with devices that do not use external servers (only needed for home automation)
- get a server to host everything. (Only needed for selfhosting)
lets talk about costs..
There are savings and costs when going off the grid.
My proton subscription is the duo plan, just for my daughter and me. https://proton.me/pricing
I've spent €300,- on a server, €50,- on a router and then some for my home automation devices. If you don't go the selfhosting route, and you don't have smart home appliances, you only need a router.
Not everybody is comfortable with flashing roms on phones. You can get phones with de-google-ized android versions pre-installed.
